BUTTERMILK SUGAR COOKIES
1 cup butter (2
sticks)
3/4 cup sugar
1 tablespoon grated
orange peel
1 teaspoon vanilla
extract
3 cups all-purpose
flour
1 teaspoon nutmeg
1/2 teaspoon baking
powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup buttermilk
sugar
Cream butter in large
mixer bowl until fluffy. Mix in orange peel and vanilla until blended. Combine
dry ingredients. Add dry ingredients alternately with buttermilk, beginning and
ending with dry ingredients. Mix well after each addition. Shape dough into
logs 2 inches in diameter. Wrap in plastic; refrigerate several hours or
overnight.
Preheat oven to 375.
Slice cookies 1/4 inch thick. Place on buttered cookie sheets. Sprinkle lightly
with sugar. Bake 10 to 12 minutes, or until edges are golden and center is firm
to the touch. Cool slightly on cookie sheets. Remove and cool completely on
wire rack.
